To become a Deputy Sheriff, you must:

  • Be a Nash County resident (or live within 50 miles of the Sheriffs Office)
  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Be of good moral character with positive credit history
  • Have a minimum of a high school education (college preferred)
  • Never been charged or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
  • Be physically fit
  • Possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Division (BLET)

Starting Salary:  $56,266
Senior Deputy:   $62,272 (3 years of service)
Master Deputy:  $67,858 (4 years of service AND Intermediate Certificate)




Detention Officer Recruits

To become a Detention Officer, you must:

  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Be of good moral character with positive credit history
  • Have a minimum of a high school education
  • Never been charged or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
  • Possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina Detention Officer Certification within one year of hire from the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Division (DOCC)

Starting Salary:  $48,538
Senior Detention: $56,060 (3 years of service)
Master Detention: $61,667 (4 years of service AND Intermediate Certificate)
